Ingredients
Scale
- 3 large firm apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg (optional)
- 1 large egg, beaten
- 1 cup panko breadcrumbs
- Cooking spray or olive oil spray
Instructions
- Wash, core, and cut the apples into thick, fry-like strips, ensuring uniform thickness for even cooking.
- In a shallow bowl, mix the flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and half of the sugar to create the first breading station.
- Beat the egg in a second bowl.
- Combine the panko breadcrumbs with the remaining sugar in a third bowl.
- Dredge each apple strip in the flour mixture, dip into the beaten egg, then coat thoroughly with the breadcrumb mixture. Repeat the coating if desired for extra crunch.
- Preheat your air fryer to 400°F (200°C). Lightly spray the coated apple fries with cooking spray.
- Arrange the apple fries in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Cook for 8-10 minutes, flipping halfway through until golden and crispy.
- Remove from the air fryer and let cool slightly. Optional: Drizzle with caramel sauce or dust with powdered sugar. Serve immediately.
Notes
- Use firm apples like Fuji, Gala, or Pink Lady to prevent mushiness.
- Ensure apple slices are of uniform thickness for even crisping.
- Avoid overcrowding the basket; cook in batches if needed.
- Lightly spray with cooking spray before air frying for maximum crispiness.
- Best served immediately for optimal crunch.
